Driving Licence Updates

Our DGT specialist has highlighted the following points when holders of a European licence wish to exchange (Canjear) or renew (renovar) their licence to a Spanish licence:

1. Once your original driving licence is handed in as part of the exchange process, the individual will not be able to drive outside of Spain until their full licence has been delivered to their home address.
*Due to a backlog of applications at the DGT, they are allowing original licences to be kept by the applicants until their application is processed

2. Most recent British licences have all of the driving categories included on the licence. This means that the licence holder may drive any vehicle from a scooter to a commercial bus or lorry. When going to the medical examination, it must be stipulated specifically if you wish to maintain all vehicle types. A more thorough examination will be necessary to drive buses/lorries and your expiry dates of your licence will be affected. The typical application is for a B+E licence which covers motorbike, car, trailer and caravan use.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you need any of these points explaining in more detail.
