A description of how to vote by post in the upcoming local elections

The advantage of voting by post is that it gives you the option of still voting if you are not in your village/town on election day (26th May 2019). You can place your vote beforehand at the post office.

It is important to note that you must be on the electoral register to be able to vote (censo electoral).

You have until 16th May 2019 to apply for the postal vote at your nearest post office.

The following information appears on the Correos official website and is in line with the General Election Regulations:

Postal vote from Spain

• Forms for requesting a postal vote are available to voters at post offices throughout Spain.

• Voters must fill in the official application form for voting by post, and then hand it in personally for free delivery at any Correos post office. You must show your original National Identification Document (D.N.I.) —not a receipt for a D.N.I. being processed, as it does not include a photograph— or a driver’s license (with photograph) or passport (with photograph) . These documents will be accepted even if they are expired, as long as they are originals and not photocopies.

• The corresponding Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office will send voters all the necessary documentation (by registered post) so they can place their vote. This documentation will be delivered personally to the person concerned at the address indicated on the application form (after two failed attempts at delivery to that address, a delivery notice will be left for it to be collected from the corresponding post office).

• Once the documentation has been received, the voter will present the official envelope addressed to the polling station, containing the certificate accrediting inclusion in the electoral census and their vote using the voting slip, at any post office in Spain. The item will be sent by urgent registered post and free of charge.

In the event of illness or disability, this must be accredited via an official medical certificate, which should be included together with the postal voting request form. This form can be submitted by a person authorised before a notary public or before a consulate to submit the request form on the voter's behalf. Each voter may only be represented by one authorised person and each authorised person may only represent one voter. The Correos employee who registers the request will collect all the documentation submitted by the representative (notary or consulate power of attorney and official medical certificate), to forward them to the Electoral Census Office along with the request form.
